The Town of Carney
|
The Town of Carney was founded in 1887. Carney and Addie Staples had come west, and set up a trading post on the west edge of the Sac and Fox Nation, during the recent expansion west of the recently opened Oklahoma Territory. This trading post eventually became the Town of Carney. When Addie made application to the Post Office, in 1892, she originally requested the name of Cold Springs. This name was already being used, so she decided it should be named after her husband, Carney. Thus began the process of setting up a proper town, and by 1905, Carney is a busy and bustling community. Over the years, Carney has gone through many changes, and has seen it's share of ups and downs. The citizen's of Carney have always been a close knit group, and are bound to Carney with their hearts. There is something about our community that gets into your soul, and no matter where you are, you remain a Carneyite. Carney as it is today. We hope that when you come to this little corridor of Historic Route 66, you will enjoy your time here, and get to know us and visit our businesses. We look forward to seeing all of you! |
